As a Baby Boomer, I'm beginning to believe we're all invisible. Advertisers stopped marketing to us and politicians stopped listening to us. They're all making a big mistake. We aren't dead yet. Boomers are the most educated, largest and healthiest generation ever. We have money and many of us plan to work until we take our last breath. Donald Trump, in a recent interview, made a statement something along this line: If Republicans don't stop going after Medicare, they're committing political suicide! Right on Donald! Every time I hear politicians talking about eliminating Social Security and Medicare, I ask my friends, "Are these people crazy? We baby boomers haven't died yet, and we still vote." Furthermore, we paid into those programs."
The day after I turned 50, I opened my mailbox and found a letter from AARP, as I started reading it, I thought, "How dare they! That's for old people. I'm not old!" I read on to find out they were going to send me a magazine. No way! I'm not having a magazine called "Modern Maturity" coming to my house! That's the magazine with those "silver foxes" on the front cover. They're old; you can tell by their gray hair!
Five years later, while I sat in the waiting room of a doctor's office, a magazine caught my eye on a table. It had a blond Goldie Hawn on the front cover and the name was AARP. "Okay, I'll join."
I'd like to say something to the makers of Ensure. I remember those ads on TV and in magazines several years back showing a middle-aged woman giving her elderly mother a can of Ensure. You touted it as something that every elderly person should drink to stay alive. True you're marketing it to the young, active baby boom generation now, but you can't fool me or any other baby boomer. We have long memories and we're smart. No way am I drinking that stuff!
